Concrete is tough, yet for particular environments, it’s just not sufficient. Concrete wears out over time. The lifespan depends on the use and maintenance of your concrete floor. Concrete hardeners and densifiers are used to prevent floors from wearing out prematurely. These products protect, preserve, and strengthen concrete flooring through a uniform curing and sealing process.

Concrete hardeners are a permanent, transparent sealer that protects underlying concrete from damage caused by chemicals and contaminants. Liquid concrete hardeners create a chemical reaction when applied to concrete, penetrating pores. Hardeners act as a strong adhesive for different floor coverings and surface treatments. Also, they prevent newly poured concrete from curling, a distortion of a slab into a curved shape by upward or downward bending of the edges. Hardeners are applied to new or existing slabs.

Liquid Floor Hardeners and Dustproofing is a clear water base, non-toxic, odourless, penetrating, impregnating, silicate product. These compounds harden the concrete surface rendering it dust free and because of the pore blocking action the penetration of liquids such as mineral oil, petrol, alcohol, water, and alcoholic solutions are reduced.

The typical application of these products is as a single flood coat of 200 sf/US gallon (5 m2/litre), which is allowed to penetrate the concrete for a period of approximately 45 minutes. Application rates, material qualities and methods vary between manufacturers — But we always refer to the manufacturer’s printed instructions for guidance. To obtain maximum results, it is recommended that 28 days of hardening occur before applying a liquid densifier.

These materials are maintenance free because they become part of the concrete and cannot be worn off like a traditional surface coating. This is a major advantage over conventional sealers, which typically require re-coating in high traffic areas.
